Review:

This is a complicated book to explain. I had some trouble deciding if I should review it, but I did because the writing was what I was reviewing. I can’t put any input on how accurate the story is. All I know is that it had a great plot. The thing that made me subtract a star was I think it was a little long-winded. I feel like the book could have been shorter and a little more fast-paced. I don’t know if that was the author's choice or if it was done like that, but I had trouble getting into it. I found the plot and conclusion very compelling and, at some parts, hard to read because of the challenges she faced, but I feel it could have been a little more emotionally complex. The emotions seemed very surface level, and I had a hard time actually feeling them myself. It was hard to not feel like the book was a little 2d. It may be because this is the author's first novel, but it felt a little bit like an uphill climb. When looking at the book not based on the story, it was amazing, but the writing style just rubbed me the wrong way. It was a very interesting read but could have been so much better.

Synopsis From Book:

As a biracial, unenrolled tribal member and the product of a scandal, eighteen-year-old Daunis Fontaine has never quite fit in, both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation. Daunis dreams of studying medicine, but when her family is struck by tragedy, she puts her future on hold to care for her fragile mother. The only bright spot is meeting Jamie, the charming new recruit on her brother Levi’s hockey team. Yet even as Daunis falls for Jamie, certain details don’t add up and she senses the dashing hockey star is hiding something. Everything comes to light when Daunis witnesses a shocking murder, thrusting her into the heart of a criminal investigation. Reluctantly, Daunis agrees to go undercover, but secretly pursues her own investigation, tracking down the criminals with her knowledge of chemistry and traditional medicine. But the deceptions—and deaths—keep piling up and soon the threat strikes too close to home. Now, Daunis must learn what it means to be a strong Anishinaabe kwe (Ojibwe woman) and how far she'll go to protect her community, even if it tears apart the only world she’s ever known.
