The Summer I Turned Pretty

Jenny Han

Review:

This was a rollercoaster of a book. It had so many of the maybe I like this, maybe I don’t moments, and it just felt so strange. I always have been iffy about the aurora writing style, but this book just put me over the edge. I feel like it would have been a little better if there wasn’t the whole multiple live interests thing. It was just so predictable. I knew from the beginning that Susannah was sick and that Conrad would end up being the main love interest. I’m super glad she didn’t end up with Cam (because I thought he was a little controlling), but I wish she had at least given Jeremiah a chance. I don’t think I will be reading the second book, but I will be watching the movie because if it is anything like “To The Boys, I’ve Loved Before,” it will be good! Future Maya: The TV show was bad too.

Trigger Warnings:
Slut shaming, Alcohol consumption, and Parent with terminal cancer.

Synopsis From Book:

Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer—they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one terrible and wonderful summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along.
