Review:

Awww! This felt like such a modern folklore with the twists, turns, and that classic folklore feel. I liked the way it was broken up into sections and how the different perspectives ended up working really well together. I also really loved the way the book had that fairy tale feel. I liked the main characters, but it was especially interesting to read about a character who is gender fluid and what their feelings were throughout the book. It made me feel like a better person to be able to know what to do when I meet someone who is gender fluid. It was really cool how the ending was handled and how much the characters grew as people and as friends, siblings, and lovers. I am interested to see whether there will be a second book and, if there is, how will it work? The concept of the sea and all the minor storylines we encounter along the way adds depth and meaning to a story that does seem a little single-sided. There were so many cool and interesting parts that I would have never thought of. I know I already said this, but I absolutely loved the characters and how well they are written. This was a great book, and I would definitely recommend.

Synopsis From Book:

board the pirate ship Dove, Flora the girl takes on the identity of Florian the man to earn the respect and protection of the crew. For Flora, former starving urchin, the brutal life of a pirate is about survival: don’t trust, don’t stick out, and don’t feel. But on this voyage, as the pirates prepare to sell their unsuspecting passengers into slavery, Flora is drawn to the Lady Evelyn Hasegawa, who is en route to a dreaded arranged marriage with her own casket in tow. Flora doesn’t expect to be taken under Evelyn’s wing, and Evelyn doesn’t expect to find such a deep bond with the pirate Florian. Soon the unlikely pair set in motion a wild escape that will free a captured mermaid (coveted for her blood, which causes men to have visions and lose memories) and involve the mysterious Pirate Supreme, an opportunistic witch, and the all-encompassing Sea itself.
