Review:

I am a little disappointed. I kept on waiting for the real plot twist, and it ended up not actually being about her. She also didn’t solve the mystery!! It was still entertaining and kept me going until the end, but I was disappointed in the plot twist. I think from what I understand, the uncle of the boys is still alive and was the gust she played chess with. I don’t know; maybe he’s her dad or something, but I still really don’t understand. I can’t believe it ended like that. She also was supposed to be really good at solving puzzles, but then she needed everyone else’s help for pretty much every clue. There weren’t enough moments of her being a puzzle genius, so it made the story seem too hard, which is not what you want in a puzzle book. You obviously want some resistance but not to the point that it seems like the main character is useless. I know there will be a second book, and I will probably read it [I never did and don't plan to], but I hope it redeems itself a little bit. Overall a good book but it had some plot holes, and the ending was not as crazy as I was expecting.

Synopsis From Book:

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why--or even who Tobias Hawthorne is. To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch--and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a con-woman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.
